Chasing Your Passion, More Than Just A Dream.

Author

Finding your passion, reaching for your dreams and being what you want are all common motivational phrases that are currently being used. They are even becoming a punchline in  some circles. I am sure you have heard some of them "follow your passions and end up starving" that type of thing.

Finding your passion is something that I believe that everyone should do. Your passion is what makes you happy. For some it art. For others it is music. There are as many passions as there are people. But the mistake that is made by a lot of people is that when people hear about chasing your passion they think that means to give up on what they are doing that puts food on the table and go for it. Well anyone who is chasing their passions knows that is about one of the worst things you can do. There are no guarantees that your going to be a success at your passion.

In my article about How I Find Inspiration I talked about some people I know personally who inspire me. The main reason they inspire me is that they are all reaching for their dreams and following their passions. But the fact that they are chasing their passions and still doing it while holding down jobs to make it happen is what is most inspirational to me.

That makes the achievement of reaching your goals even the more sweet. Knowing that you did it while working against the odds. You not only gave your dreams your all but also your "other life".  To work 40 hours or more at your job then come home have a family and then chase your dreams makes you a very motivated person. It shows your level of dedication to achieving a goal.

That makes all of it more worthwhile. I have been doing what I love for about 10 years now. I have "reinvented" myself a couple of times. By that I mean I have been doing webdesign and helping market things I believe in for that long. But by chasing my passion of local music and local artists my site has gone from being about what I can do to what makes me do what I do then on to helping people who are dealing with the same things I am in life.

But to reach your goals you have to have more than dreams, motivation and inspiration. You have to have the willingness to put in the hard work. You have to have the willingness to look at yourself and say "where do I need to be to achieve my goals?" "What do I need to do?"

If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride - and never quit, you'll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards. Paul Bryant

But there is one thing you need to have.  You have to have attitude. Attitude is a huge part of who a person is. I am not talking about the bad type that makes you treat people badly and makes everyone hate you. I am talking about the attitude that makes a person exude confidence. They type of confidence that makes people believe that you know exactly what you are doing, where you are going and that you have no doubts about yourself.

But where does that attitude come from? I believe in my case the attitude comes from ability and faith. The abilities I poses and the faith I have in myself to able to be able to tell people what I can do to help them and back it up with action. That is where my confidence and attitude come from. Faith in myself and believing in my abilities. Just like I said, confidence in yourself gives you the attitude to be a success and project that success.

You may feel right now that you spent a few minutes reading something that took you in a big circle only to make you think "no kidding buddy" but I was not telling you this to motivate you. I was telling you this to so that you understand what I have learned in the past few years about finding my passion and reaching for my dreams.

All through my life I have wanted to do things such as be a disc jockey, work with organizations to help them grow by promoting them have been a big fan of graphic design. How things are laid out etc. When I found Geo Cities (a website where people could make their own websites) and started learning HTML I really became excited about the internet. I spent many hours teaching myself the what to do, how and when of webdesign. It seemed that although I loved what I was doing it still was miles away from being a disc jockey.

It finally came to me that they all are tied together. Yes I loved music and all of that but it was not being a disc jockey that I loved. It was the ability to promote things that I like and believe in. I like promoting local music, local events and local artists. People who are doing just what I am doing. Reaching for their dreams. I also learned that I can not promote something if I don't believe in it. If there is not a connection with it I can't just go out and say this is the best thing in the world, check it out.

So for the last 10 years I have not only put the work into learning and honing my craft but also the work it takes to keep a family going and to keep yourself afloat until that dream of being my own boss. Of running my life and having it be for me and my family and not making money for some stock holders somewhere.

NEWSFLASH: You Will Never Get Really Rich Working For Someone Else

Although it is true that you probably will not get rich working for someone else the question is "Is that the purpose for what you are doing?" are you trying to get rich or are you trying to enjoy life? Are you trying to live a dream? If your dream is to be rich, the you probably should just play the lottery. You will have a better chance than working to get rich.

The thing is that a lot of people define success as how much money a person makes or how many toys they have. Some define success as having a family, a job and a home. Those are very noble goals for sure. I define it as are you happy with your station in life. Are you where you want to be, are you doing what you want, are you happy with that and are you the best you can be at it? To me if you answer those questions with yes then you are a success.

To me reaching for your dreams and being a success is as much about the journey than it is the goal. Sure that is what you want, but look at what you have achieved and how. You learned how strong you are, how intelligent, how creative and more.

This is the reason that I get so upset when I hear the negative people putting down folks who are trying to follow their passion and reach their goals. I truly believe that those who can't do, criticize. I choose to be the kind who encourages and inspires and not criticize and ridicule.
